you have a very interesting article about winglets on NASA website

It must be noticed that the theory on winglets states that there is a forward force created opposed to the drag,
and yes, as stated by Maverick, winglets only reduce the vortices and improve the performances (fuel consumption). until end of the 70's, aircraft have no winglets.

whatever it is just 'theory of flight'.Theories that most agreed are selected. See....the subject itself is unique. In aviation you hardly find a real 'true' thing. That's why i love aviation. Definitely we don't see a subject of 'science of flight' ...
