CPL flight training

Postby Shumway » Sun Nov 06, 2011 11:56 pm

Just curious, when doing CPL training in flying schools, after obtaining PPL, what kind of flying training is done on the single engine?
I believe in the syllabus there's like total of 150 hours in the CPL course, which includes about 30 hours in twin engine. So that's about 120 hours on single engine. It takes about 50 hours to obtain PPL. So what is the other 70 hours training on single engine after obtaining PPL?

Its 200hrs of flying which includes 145hrs in the single engine (42hrs for PPL and remaining 103hrs for CPL). Remaining 55hrs will broken down to 35hrs for twin and 20hrs on a flight trainer device (sim). Some schools play around with the 55hrs twin engine flying by only planning 25hrs on the actual aircraft and remaining 30hrs on the procedure trainer/sim. Either way it will total up to 200hrs for the whole CPL/IR with frozen ATPL course.
I'm referring to the general syllabus in Malaysia. Not sure how its done in Australia and Philippines.

So takes about 42hrs to obtain PPL, and another 103hrs for CPL training on single engine. So what else is learned in this 103hrs on the single or is it just flying nav / gh to build hours?

Besides NAV/GH you got IF (Instrument flying) as well that will be done both mutual and dual. The rest is basically solo flying to build your confidence as well as preparing you for the 3 Tests that will be done at the end of your 145hrs of single engine flying. Those 3 tests are namely IF, NAV and GH. That should see you through for the next phase which is the twin engine.

In some places they break it down to 50hrs for PPL and 100hrs for CPL. It all depends on the school.

IF on single engine? I thought in M'sia initial instrument rating must be done on a twin only?

Basic IF will be done in S/E..

You thought? It has always been like that. We are looking at ~35hrs of IF sorties not including the PT (Test).

Lessons include :
-VOR/DME Approach
-Tracking Radials
-NDB (becoming obsolete soon)
-ILS Approaches
-Holdings
-Practices under the hood includes : Rate 1, medium, steep turns, approach to stall recovery and unusual attitude.

However the Instrument Rating part (IRT) which the final test will be done on the twin. All those basic training on the single engine will be further advanced when you progress into the twin. Stuffs like SID/STAR/Airways will be done on the twin including the lessons above.

But all the IF training on single engine will be "simulated", as in it will still officially be a VFR flight?
