NEW FACELIFT NEEDED.......

Postby drebarbas » Sat Aug 28, 2010 10:51 pm

Dear Mods,

Of lately I found that this forum is getting from bad to worst as far as quality and presentations are concerned. This is not only will hinder more professionals to join and contribute but will keep away the present members from contributing apart from the 'kids' and 'wannabes'.

I am sure most of us are aware that when FD was up and running, there were a lot more active professional members contributing compare to now.

Perhaps a new facelift, more relevant topics to aviation and more active recruitment drive, like members get members, invite more line pilots/engineers/ATCers/Cabin crew to contribute will help.

I came across this particular forum and I found that it is very interesting layout, more relevant and more systematic. Of course, apart from Pprune, the owner of this forum could probably do some major overhaul by introducing something similar to this link:-

Thank you

Thanks for your suggestion. As you have already noted, we have an entire different audience compared to the forums you have mentioned (or even MalaysianWings for a nearer example). We have many wannabes here discussing on their aspiration, and I suppose those already in the industry would find it hard to relate.

As such, I believe the look and feel of this forum account for a lesser part of the problem. Perhaps we can restructure the forums and sub-forums. Would like to hear more from you guys :)

Drebarbas and teddy,

The layout facelift is actually not a bad idea. Teddy's reasons do make sense, but at the same time, it would be useless to only have wannabes in the forum. Giving it a more professional, adult facelift (maybe a name change as well?) would make the forum more attracting to the actual pilots, engineers or any other air crew.

I have been off the forum for quite some time, and the main reason for my absence was the mindset of the forumers. The way they talk is not only childish but hard to understand when someone uses the language of their respective race. And all the blaming in topics of air crashes, without real proof. Not to mention the fighting, which is just sickening.

I hope someone can do something about this. Maybe more moderators are required to add (or replace?) to the current ones. And more real life engineers and pilots are needed. What about requiring moderators to write weekly or monthly articles about aviation? Give them an individual board to write in.

These are just some things which can be thought about.

Firqin, drebarbas and Teddy.
Basically I am agreeable with what you guys have in mind.

Personally one of the mojor turn offs that turn away existing forummers is the pathetic english, acronyms and lingo that giving an impression that we're reading an SMS! I did!Coupled with inexperience and attitude this forum is spiralling down in terms of popularity.
Yes we need to do something. Facelift, new name whatever. We somewhat lost 'it' after flydamnit closed.
I also would like to suggest an extended time of moderation until these new comers were up to standard or speed. We need this the maintain the 'quality' of our forum, contents and members. I logged in everyday, several times daily so I can volunteer for that.
Lately I have warned and disapproved more than 'normal' that I would usually do as they were really substandard and unprofessional like, even locked the Gunung Pulai crash thread.

Firqin, I like the weekly/monthly articles suggestion. Surely there are enough senior experienced pilots, engineers and cabin crews, etc out there to contribute, right?

I am for the improvements of this forum and the sooner we do the better before it's too late.

Have a good one guys!

I just started reading FLYLAH during the Gunung Pulai Crash.
Tried to post several vocal opinions but ALL were turned down.
Almost giving up hope on FLYLAH as my personal opinions and I even been to the crash site.
I'm no wannabe.
But real, real pilots have told me this is a LOUSY page to even look at.
All of a sudden the Gunung Pulai Crash little Thread just shut down, no postings allowed.
Proofing this is a real lousy page to carry on.

i would like to share my idea...maybe it can be included in the list.

1) Change the facelift. IMO lets change to 'dark' style. I mean color like dark grey or black.I feel more interested to a forum with black layout with thin bright borders . The attention to this kind of layout is somewhat like : professional, focus, private, exclusive.. etc...people will love to explore and contribute more as they have been induced into the forum. PSYCHOLOGY. The current is seems like too childish i think.. sorry.

2) Maybe some re-structures of the topic section will do. I see that many newcomers got lost and disappear. Do direct them for what to do clearly.. DO's and DONT's . emphasize more on forum regulation. :)

3) Do make important documents, information to be readily available... like download link for regulations book, note explaining about most ask questions in threads. We have been asked about EASA, BCAR, training school etc and lets make those lost souls out there understand by just a click.

4) ....

Posted Message to be Updated

Postby hersheys » Tue May 31, 2011 8:18 pm

I have a question.

I have recently made a post (30th May)(flying-academies/topic755.html), but it was not reflected as updated discussion thread. Instead, it shows 1st April (outdated message). :=\:

I thought, every piece of message member posted will be reflected right on top of that category discussion list.

May I know is there something wrong with the system?

Thank you.

I would like to make a few suggestions on the looks of this site:

1. It is too blue.
The smilies are also blue. This makes this forum look very monotonous. Very.

2. Concerning the lingo.
I feel the lingo and how users post on this site with English that may be hurtful to someone's eyes is mostly attributed to how this site was named in the first place. In my personal opinion, I too came to this site named "Fly Lah" thinking that this site would allow pilots to talk amongst themselves in a loose way. I'm not saying it can be along the lines of "woi apa la lu. lu ingat like that?" but I definitely didn't foresee a relatively high expectation of English from moderators and the likes. Allow me to be frank, I don't think foreign pilots will know what "Lah" is and come to this forum, hence why I thought the lingo will be a lot closer to home.

In a nutshell I thought this forum will be a breakaway from airliners.net

3. Reply functions are very limited.
My point in number 2 is actually a reply to torx. However because I can't quote him or such, it looks like he has to read my post all the way to here to realise this does have something to do with his suggestions too.
