Flight Operation Officer

Postby nadzha » Sat Feb 05, 2011 2:53 pm

Hello fellow aviation,
i wonder the reality of flight operation officer (FOO), starting from attending courses, career job scope in world aviation. is it similar to air traffic control (ATC) officers?

As i search through the internet, FOO and ATC officers, from in term of job scope, both of them are responsible for the safety of aircraft. Both of them are officially licensed by Malaysia DCA.

Please do correct me if i'm wrong since i'm still a newbie..as far im understand, ATC officers will be incharge in controlling the air traffic in given located area. Their job scope to make sure, any aircraft come across in their radar are flown safely and charging for the approach of an aircraft for touchdown. As for FOO, they work with an airlines, they are responsible from planning a route for designated location, make sure any contingency plan available if anything wrong do come across till the plane is safely touchdown.

So, my question is, is there any opportunity for us, fellow aviation enthusiast (as i become interested on becoming FOO) having this career in Malaysia? Till now, not many academy/private college offered the courses. Malaysia Airlines Academy do offer the courses, mostly preferred to those who are new to the AOC (Airlines Operation Centre), staff who want to deepen their knowledge in AOC. They also might encourage outsiders to take the course since it Jeppesen syallabus teach by authorized Jeppesen instructor. The problem is;
1. The duration length of the courses; only 5-days for level-1 and 6-weeks for level-2
1. The fee are quite expensive but worthwhile taking it since the courses are held at fully equip Malaysia Airlines Academy.
2. After graduated, am i still on the job hunting??

There are few private college who offered the same courses for FOO nowadays. But it took 3 years to complete the courses since it private education sector and it do not have any affiliation/accreditation from our top national major airlines. Of course, the facility/equipment are limited and might fully in theory.

Any contribution from others are appreciate. I do hope fellow aviation do share their knowledge, a piece of advice, guidance perhaps in this topic. :)

p/s: Sorry to post in the ATC sub-topic since i found both ATC and FOO are quite similiar in their job scope. hope no harm was done..hihi.. :p
