CAP 741 is the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Log Book published by the CAA UK.
This document is to be used by Engineers as a record of the individual's employment history, experience and qualifications and can be used to confirm technical competency when applying for a licence, examination or seeking employment.
The 'new' format is reduced to A5 user friendly size following industry request.
It clarifies the function and qualification requirements for the Assessor and introduces new tasks to align with the current Part 66 syllabus.

There are no requirements that specifically say that you have to purchase and use an original copy. It is merely a set standard/format/layout that has been laid down to satisfy the requirements. You can use whatever format you want as long as it has the minimum and satisfies the required standards.

At the CAA UK's website you can download a copy (for printing copies naturally) or order the printed format.

"Note: The aforementioned ‘maintenance experience’ refers to a documented Schedule of Inspection work that is compiled in an appropriate format as agreed by DGCA." AN no.1101..try to ask DCA whether you can use the old JPA-5AER(A) or not..
