COSMIC RADIATION

Postby drebarbas » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:40 pm

How many of us aware that when we are up there in the sky, we are exposed to cosmic radiation? The more we are flying the more exposure we will get.

In Malaysia, none of the airlines have adopted or implemented a policy to limit the exposure. this may be due to lack of knowledge, expertise, regulations etc ..........

Cosmic radiation dosages are shown in milliSieverts (mSv) or units of one thousandth of a Sievert. Cosmic radiation dosages are calculated using the CARI-6 computer prediction series developed by the US FAA. The International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) limit for non-classified workers, such as Flight crew, is 6 mSv for a rolling 12-months. For additional safety margin considerations, certain companies has established a lower internal action limit of 4.8 mSv for a rolling 12-months. If a crew is found to exceed this internal action limit, the roster will be managed individually to ensure that the cumulative 12-months cosmic radiation exposure does not exceed 6 mSv. The above ICRP limits and the said company thresholds are for occupational exposure of cosmic radiation that is in addition to the normal background radiation of about 2mSv per annum.

So guys, especially who work for LCC or main income derived from flying hours, stop for a second and consider this threat. It is your health and future ..........

Just a thought.

drebarbas,

Very good article! A lot of us do not know (or prefer not to know) about these health hazarding situations. Especially in a country like ours, where the sun shines for the whole year.

I guess the main reason why airlines are reluctant to adopt this regulation is because the Malaysian DCA does not have specific laws for it. And not to mention the shortage of Captains in our local LCCs.

Something to ponder about when someone is telling you about the risks of night flying, huh?

Anyway, theres an online calculator from FAA to calculate howmuch radiation your have received for a specific flight. Here it is:

You can also download one here:
