Visual Reporting Points

Postby Shumway » Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:17 am

Is it stated anywhere the visual reporting points when flying VFR?
I only notice 'official' visual reporting points in the AIP within control zones of certain airfields (VFR lanes).

Other than that, en-route I can't seem to find any publications with regards to visual reporting points.

Any ideas if such a thing exists?

hie... shumway.. 1st of all the 'establish' reporting point is design or made to protect IFR acft (depart/arrival) or other local traffic in the vicinity of Aerodrome (what they call TMA or CTR/CTZ). The airspace is class 'C' where VFR & IFR acft separated. For those flying outside Control Zone such as Kuala Selangor area, that area is class 'G' where traffic info are given if requested by pilot..

The idea is to prevent VFR flight to enter IFR approach / departure path that can endanger the safe of flying.. ::D:

I've flown in a rather unfamiliar area, & the controller asked me to report passing XXX (a town or something) which I don't see on my map.
In order to avoid embarassment I just said that I would report YYY (a reporting point which I know)...

That's what leads me to my 1st question - who comes up with these visual reporting points?

as i concern.. the maps being used by controller & and your maps maybe not match in terms of reporting point.. mostly we use maps from HQ or JUPEM.. and as i know, most of the pilots area using Jeppesen maps.. furthermore sometimes pilot using more detail maps for their operation which DCA doesn't have.. i think the best way is just to report exact point where u r at.. let me check Lumpur Info maps back for publish reporting point.. ::D:

Where do we get the jeppesen maps?
I do have the same map I think everyone else is using - the outdated 1:50,000 from jabatan pemetaan Malaysia.

That's the problem. As far as I know, in Malaysia, there are no official VFR charts, so we don't know what VRPs to use.
The AIP has a few VRPs, but that is only when close to an aerodrome - they publish the VFR 'corridor' to fly to get to the airfield. Enroute, no info...

I am sorry that I don't have any relevant document to support my statement. However, based on my limited VFR experience, ATC will ask an aircraft to report at your filed turning points. E.g. You filed a VFR flt plan from SZB-KUA and Bt Caves, Bentong Town, Temerloh Town, Maran and Gambang are the filed turning points (EET included in the flt plan). ATC will ask you to report at these turning points with a standard 'position report' call.

ATC may ask an aircraft to report at any other point as well when necessary.

hrm.. looks like we are in the same dilemma condition where operator & service provider is out of a understanding.. as my 'small' team & I are trying to improve the VFR chart for controller as well for pilot also, some input from forumers or flyer are greatly appreciated... Mostly bout visual ref point that being use by flyer, like Jeli or Kuala Krai, i hv no idea what are the ref point for this area. ::D:

good to hear from u guys..

I believe in the UK, aircraft flying VFR can also use VOR & NDB stations as reporting points (as long as they are outside controlled airspace of course).
I don't think I see this practiced in M'sia, then again, I think most light aircraft here don't have a working VOR or ADF...
But is it possible to use VOR & NDB's as reporting points when flying VFR in M'sia?
