Type-rated Pilot Prospect

Postby hakujaya90 » Tue Dec 21, 2010 12:47 am

1 of my friend recently finish his course in some local flying academy.. Since Malaysian's job market for the time being isn't so welcoming, he decided to go other way and join some airline in indonesia.. But then he need to pay in advance around 30k USD for the type rating (B737) , which for me is kinda weird.. But it kept me thinking, if I pay that kind of money to MH/AK for the type rating , can I get a job with them? I mean, the thing that kept airlines from hiring fresh cadet is the cost of type rating rite? What do u guys think about the prospect of a cadet with type-rating?

I read this write up somewhere and I thought it is good to share WRT your Q here:-

Once upon a time, it was normal for airlines to recruit cadets through a process which separated the ones with the aptitude and skills best for the position / company concerned, rather than their abilities to procure cash. Times change, it is now very rare for airlines to have senior management / executive financial positions filled by people who care more about the long term sustainability of an operation, than they do about maximizing their next bonus. A fully self-funded cadet program with long term salary sacrifice is just another way of artificially lowering the ticket price and delaying the inevitable exodus of crew. Sure, a uni degree might cost a similar amount. However, does that degree lock you into single company on soup-kitchen wage? This industry has changed a lot, and is changing at its fastest rate ever. At the current rate of erosion of terms and conditions, go ahead, ask yourself where will it be by the time YOU can afford to move on??????????

No guarantee to get a job with the said airlines unless it is part of the agreement before making the payment.

Those are pilots with ratings for certain type of aircraft..only with these rating u'll be able to navigate a plane..example u need to be rated for B737 in order to navigate B737.. :)

Then the requirement to get the type rating is by paying upfront payment of 30k USD? Or it's actually involved any addition trainings?
I knew that there was no song out there for heartbroken people. I just wanted to put a song out that gave people hope - things may not work out the way you want them to, but you can move past it and everything is gonna be okay]

it involved additional trainings on the specific plane that you're getting your type rating for.
