MAS / Air Asia / SIA cadet pilot selection process

Postby papayaboy » Sat Jan 02, 2010 11:23 am

I thought that it might be helpful to list the three selection process of the above mentioned airlines as it differs from airline to airline. It will definitely help us to gauge, expect and prepare, i got these information after googling *cadet pilot selection process* , unfortunately i unable to find the selection process for MAS and SIA , with little information such as

***Shortlisted applicants will undergo 2 rounds of structured interviews and a computerised pilot selection test. The entire recruitment process takes about 2 - 4 months.****

Would really appreciate if some one could just list the cadet pilot selection process for SIA / MAS... Thanks in advance ::D:
Also, is air asia the only of the 3 major airlines here in malaysia that requires written accademic tests?

For Air Asia
The Selection Process
The process consists of the stages as follows:

1. Screening of applications
2. Written academic tests in English, Mathematics and Science (Physics) with an IQ test. Passing mark of at least 75% required in all subjects.
3. Aptitude testing
4. Interview
5. Medical Examination
6. Final selection

This is the selection process for SIA (year 2005)

First Interview (Panel of 2 Interviewers)
1. Basic questions like why you want to become a pilot.
2. Some questions relating to your current occupation.
3. Mathematical questions like working out the distance given speed and time etc...
4. Geography questions like how many continents, where the nearest ocean from X country etc...
5. Depending on the interviewer, they may or may not ask you technical information about aircrafts.
6. You can expect a wait of 7-9 days before they contact you on the results of the First Interview through the phone and email.

Second Interview (2 days affair)
First day
1. You can expect to settle some admin stuff like certifying true copies of your documents before lunch. The email will state the things you need to bring.
2. After lunch you will be put through some Computer-based tests. Physcomotor, Logic and Memory tests.
3. End of First day.

Second day
Part One
1. In the morning, you will be broken up into groups of 5 for the team-building exercise. There are a series of questions here for individual work and group work. There will also be a question where they give you some building blocks and see how effectively you communicate with your teammates on getting the task done. Do be sure to follow ALL the rules or you will be penalized!!
2. Just before lunch, you will be asked to write an essay of about 50 words.
3. After lunch, the second interview will begin.

Part Two (The Interview - Panel of 4-5 Interviewers)
1. The series of questions asked during the Second Interview will be slightly similar to the First Interview but there will be more technical questions.
2. Depending on the interviewers, they may ask you how a jet engine works, how many wheels does a plane have etc...
3. After your interview, you will be separated from those who have not gone for the interview so do not think that you can ask the person who comes out what his/her questions were.
4. After the interview, the tea-party begins. The best is just to be yourself because the interviewers are very sharp people. For the beverage part, it is only a rumor that you should not take the alcohol, the panel of interviewers actually offered us saying that we can relax already. (The reason HR might say to abstain from the alcohol could just be that they want to cut cost...but if you're those who gets drunk easily then please don't take any.)

Medical Check-up
1. After the Second Interview, you will have to call up the next day at a specific time. You will then know whether or not you clear the interview in order to go for the medical check-up.
2. The medical check-up will take roughly half a day and you will need to go to 3 clinics.
3. After the medical, what most people do not realize is that the application is then sent to MOM for clearance.
4. You can expect to wait about 2 weeks before they contact you on whether they decide to take you in. They will at this point also tell you your posting.

thank you so so so much for your reply ::D: !! im sure this will help much of us !!

After reading through briefly, can we conclude that SIA's approach to cadet pilot selection is a little different from MAS / Air Asia? In essence, from what i read, SIA does not seem to emphasize more on exam based academics such as Air Asia's requirement to excel in form 5 level tests in which we have to gain a minimum of 75 % ++ ( although they require you to have CGE A levels / diploma / degree )

To me it seems that SIA finds persons with the right character first before they pin you down ( in accordance with its selection process structure interview first )

Whereas, MAS / Air Asia shortlist down person's with the academic qualification based on SPM lvl tests.

Hence i would assume that SIA's selection approach is a tad different from MAS / SIA. Correct me if i am wrong as i am a newbie here with my second post and have a ton of questions heheh.. thanks again and have a nice day !! ::D:

For SIA , they already shortlisted down the list when you applying the job by looking at your academic result , so for the 1st stage or 1st interview , you only can see about 20-40ppl per batch for the first interview .

And for AK and MAS, most of the people that applied have the chances go for the 1st stage , so you can see more than 300ppl doing the test per batch .

So it mean that if your result are not good, you totally have no chance to take SIA interview but ak and mas , you still have the chances to prove that you can do well

wow... that means it's even tougher to be SIA cadet pilot.....
I have heard about some of the story regarding the tea-party in the SIA selection program. The tea-party is actually another stage of interview that they gonna to test your real personalities and how you can interact with others. So, just stay as what you are during the party and they will see if you have the potential to be a P-I-L-O-T. I can say that it's good if you can really go through the whole interview process in SIA although I'm failed to even shortlisted for the very first stage. :(

All the best....
It's time to fly........

Just want to clarify a thing on AK's interview. I read previous post on "AirAsia Cadet Pilot Selection Test 3rd Stage Final Interview" and it seems like their 3rd stage interview is divided into 2 parts: oral presentation and ultimately, the 'chit-chatting' session with interview board.

Seems like what the 3 have in common are: psychomotor test, written test, interview and medical check-up.
AK + oral presentation
SIA + group activities
MAS + (will do more research)

But no matter if an airline decided to have 'bottleneck' process at the very beginning or at the end stage, airlines' selection system especially for cadet intake is a stringent process. They will only select the best in the end though according to some, this is arguable. Now that we've familiarized ourselves a bit on each airlines' methods, how about we discuss how to tackle each steps? Here's something to kick start our discussion....

oh, btw zymeth90. The example questions that the link above provided does not seem to require the use of scientific/any calculator. But I guess we can ask if we happen to get to the 2nd stage though the help from others who've gone through this stage before is highly appreciated. That way, we might be able to pin down set or types of questions that we should focus more on, right? All the best.

as far i know there's no essay writing in MAS, same goes to AK if I'm not mistaken. the verbal test is a written test also, but the MISPA is objective rite? :)

from what i read above, SIA is the toughest airline to get in..haha...but they r not taking Malaysians anymore as far as i concern.

MAS MISPA cannot use calculator and no essays required
just questions on currency, statistic, logic and finally personality ~
