Question: Am I qualitfied to be an airline pilot?

Postby WangDake » Sun Feb 27, 2011 1:54 pm

Hi,

I'd like join these cadet pilot programmes offered by airlines, but I'm not sure if I am qualified.
Let's leave the question my SPM result aside first because it's not anounced yet. I almost have all the requirements to join the cadet programme pffered but there's just some problems that I'm not sure about.

1. my english writing and speaking are not exceptionally good as you can see from my writting here. Sometimes I run out of vocab in my conversations with others and I'm kind of used to mixing languages in my speaking (I'm Malaysian ><). And the way I speak is never formal. Look at the way I write this post! I've never attended no interview before, thinking about going to these interviews really gives me nerves. Could it be possible fo me to pass the interview with my poor english?

2. I have this 'Floaters' problem. I don't know if you all have experienced or heard this before. It's that I can see some transparent floating stuff (something like worms/ threads) when I look at something bright eg. Sky, computer screen, etc. But I don't feel like it's distracting my view.
So, am I still qualified?

3. And why is the height requirement of Singapore Airline (165cm) diferrent from MAS one (163cm)? I thought there should be a standard one?
I'm 163 cm tall, is it completely no hope for me if I would like to interview for SG airline cadet pilot programme?

Okay, I think we should wait for the SPM results to be announced first, If you are qualified, you will be put through a couple of tests in order to see if you meet the requirements as per individual Airlines.. As for your eye sight, it would not be a problem if you pass the Class 1 medical which all pilots are put through every 12 months or 6 months if your >40yrs old. As for the height requirement, I'm not so sure.. try browsing through the SIA Cadet Pilot and the MAS thread for more info..

Cheers and Godspeed.

Hi there,
Firstly, I'm no pilot and probably ain't qualified to answer your questions, but I'll try to answer your questions.

1. There's a certain proficiency and comprehension of English you must have in order to qualify. That said, you don't need to hold a professor in English either. As long as you can carry yourself in a professional manner and speak proper English, I would think you'd qualify based on how you have structured your questions. But that also depends on airliners who have their own internal requirement. Remember, there are alot of aspiring pilots out there, and having a good verbal command would give you an added advantage.

2. As far as I know, going through a DCA-approved eye exam myself, the only important tests to pass a Class A medical would be a visual acuity test, before and after correction, using the Snellen Chart, and the colour blind test using the Ishihara Charts to test colour blindness. I was told even that test, one could pass if he/she was partially colour blind, as the most important colours to differenciate would be Red and Green, due to the fact that cockpit instruments would typically use red and green as warning lights.

As far as I know, floaters shouldn't be a problem. As long as you're not epileptic - which is caused by rapid flashing bright lights, you should be fine. If you're worried, you could always go and take a Class A medical on your own accord to see if you qualify. It should cost between RM300-RM350 as far as I know.

3. Different airlines have different requirements for Cadet Pilot positions. Just like MAS, AA and SIA where MAS and AA's requirements are SPM, whereas SIA's requirements are GCE 'A', Polytechnic Diploma or Degree, height requirements are at the company's discretion.

That said, I was related a story that there was an incident where an applicant got through all the stages in MAS (psychomotor, psychometric and personality), but got eliminated immediately by the interviewers when he showed up for an interview because he didn't meet the height requirements. Also, when I went for interview with SIA just last week, they will measure your height before the interview to check if you adhere to the requirements. They even had us test our eyes and produce a report prior to attending the interview.

Cheers and good luck! :)

Never hurts to apply, you know. At least you will not wonder what might have been.

Thank you all for replying me. ^^

Well, actually I'm only turning 18 this August. So I suppose I could only apply for next year's cadet pilot intake.
So meanwhile, shall I go for further studies like A-level first? Any suggestions?
Is possesing Bachelor Degree in Aeronautical/engineering related studies an advantage at the interviews?

Thank you!

1. Do not assume that you will get in as a cadet pilot. Go further study, live life, whatever.
2. Degree in aero engineering an advantage? No. Most important thing is that your SPM must be strong.
3. Only trust the official website/source over some jobs/business website. If SIA says A and xxx.biz says it's B, I'll always take it as A.

Well Dake, I've applied for MAS, SIA, AA and some other airlines in the middle east. So far, I went through MAS's test and was awaiting to be interviewed, but no news from them on that part, just like the other forumers here.

SIA, just had an interview with them 2 Friday's ago. Should know my results in about a week from now. AirAsia, got an email from them and was told to wait by latest June for an assessment.

So in short, I'm still in the process of seeing if I will be accepted into any one of these airlines, before apply for other airlines in this region.

To answer your question above, SIA does take in Malaysians. There was a time last year, that it was only opened to Singaporeans and Permenant Residents only. Eventually (and predictably) they opened it to Malaysians. In fact SIA advertised for vacancies early this year in the local newspapers. I believe the position is still opened for application in SIA's career portal, go have a look.

My personal opinion is that as what corolis said, understand that this cadet pilot position is highly sought after. Go ahead and apply, there's no harm in that, just that don't put your life on hold to get this position. It's true that your SPM needs to be strong to have a good chance. In my experience, MAS didn't want to look at my engineering degree transcript during my psychomotor/psychometric but only wanted to see my SPM.

SIA's requirements is GCE ‘A’ level, Polytechnic Diploma or Degree, as you read above. They still was intersted in my SPM results, which they stress MUST BE TAKEN IN ONE SITTING. SIA was interested in my degree as it's their requirement.

AIr Asia, I heard, was only SPM. I did supply them my transcript but was told by some people within AA that SPM is their benchmark.

So the bottomline is, get on with your life, and the way you should think is, if I don't get to be a pilot, what would I want to do instead. Pursue this cadet pilot position as a 'bonus'. You get it, good for you. If not, you won't die, you can try again, but don't put your life on hold for it.

Thanks, you two. I understand now.I think I'll go for A-Level study. Perhaps I should get a degree in something to get a job just incase I get fired someday by the future airline that I work with ><
Oh ya, if I go for South Australian Matriculation (equivalent to Year 12), will I meet the requirement stated by SIA even though matriculation is not mentioned??
Sometimes I wonder, why do airlines stress on the candidate's SPM results?
A person who have completed their degree or higher studies must have known more than what the Form 5 text books taught right?
What is so special or unique about SPM/ O-level ? :=\:

Break a leg? 404, lol, humour not found. The joke's lost on me. :)

In my opinion, the reason why they still look at your SPM/O level equivalent is to gauge if you could actually understand the first time you took the exam, if you can comprehend and understand the subject matter at hand. That's why they said don't play around with SPM or O-levels as it's the benchmark to gauge your personality and aptitude as well as understanding, when you take the exams the first time.

Also, I think it's used as a benchmark, since degrees from different universities may hold a different 'quality', SPM and O-levels is the proper benchmark that would be fair to all candidates.

Could be wrong, just my opinion :)

I see. ^^
break a leg = good luck. you know that right.

Anyway,is it possible that cadet pilot could get eliminated from the cadetship in the middle of the trainning?
what could possible cause that to happen?
Anyway, Analyzer, could you share with us your experience when you start with your training? :^^:
